Compact Substation

A Compact Substation (also known as a Prefabricated Substation or Package Substation) is a type-tested, factory-assembled enclosure containing high-voltage switchgear, a distribution transformer, and low-voltage distribution switchboard equipment.

In short, it acts as a “miniaturized substation”—integrating all traditional indoor/outdoor substation equipment into a single, compact, and weather-resistant housing for seamless plug-and-play installation.

Key Components

A Compact Substation is typically divided into three segregated compartments:

  • High-Voltage (HV) Compartment: Houses HV switchgear or Ring Main Units (RMU) to control and protect incoming high-voltage power.

  • Transformer Compartment: Houses either a dry-type or oil-immersed distribution transformer that steps down high voltage (e.g., 10 kV / 33 kV) to low utilization voltage (e.g., 400 V / 230 V).

  • Low-Voltage (LV) Compartment: Handles LV distribution, metering, circuit protection, and power factor correction.

  • Small Footprint: Occupies up to 70%–80% less space compared to traditional brick-and-mortar substations, making it ideal for space-constrained urban environments.

  • Factory Prefabrication: Entirely assembled, wired, and routine-tested in the factory, reducing onsite installation time by more than 80%.

  • High Safety & Reliability: Housed in durable enclosures made of stainless steel, aluminum alloy, or glass-fiber reinforced concrete (GRC), providing high protection (IP rating), weatherproofing, and tamper-resistance.

  • Flexibility & Mobility: Compact and easy to transport or relocate, capable of operating reliably in harsh environmental conditions (e.g., coastal, high-altitude, or desert climates).
